Project Alloy: Black Lives Matter

June 7, 2020

Black Lives Matter.

Project Alloy as an organization believes that Black lives matter. That statement - that Black lives matter - stands on its own and needs no qualification, no justification.

Our work as an organization since 2016 has been about supporting marginalized people within the tech industry and technical communities. Black people - and the experiences of Black people in tech - are an important part of that. We condemn police brutality because supporting Black people inside the tech industry means supporting them in their lives outside of the tech industry as well.

Since the start, we've aimed to work with a broad community, but we also firmly believe in the value of work localized to particular groups.

Project Alloy has not taken direct actions to help find justice for the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and other Black people killed in recent months and across the history of our country; there are groups already doing that work. As an organization, starting from scratch in this space would not serve the movement, but would divert resources from those efforts. Project Alloy’s leadership, staff, and volunteers are committed to engaging in our individual capacities with organizations already on the ground and getting things done.

If you do not already have that engagement in your own life, we urge you - particularly non-Black people in our audience - to seek it out. This may mean giving money to a bail fund local to you and understanding why they matter. It may be reading non-fiction about race by Black authors, or on specific topics such as prison abolition. It may mean getting involved with local activist groups and showing up at protests to support Black people already out there. It may mean getting involved and showing support from home.

To our members who are also members of the Black community: we continue to stand with you and will continue to support your journeys in tech and beyond.

Black Lives Matter.
